Who we are
venture out. (“we”, “us”) operates www.ventureout.life. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your rights under UK GDPR and the EU General Data Protection Regulation.
What we collect
- Account data — email, username, display name, profile photo, password hash. Provided by you on signup.
- Content — ventures, stops, photos, comments, follows, likes, saves, reports you submit.
- Location — if you choose to use Near me, your browser’s coarse location for that session only. Stop locations you log are saved to your ventures.
- Usage data — when you accept analytics, Google Analytics 4 collects pages viewed, events (likes, saves, searches and similar), device type, approximate region, and a randomly assigned identifier. IP addresses are anonymised.
Cookies and similar technologies
We use a small number of strictly necessary cookies for sign-in and security. These are always on. With your consent, we also use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used. You can change your choices any time using the link below.
If you are signed in and have given analytics consent, we send your account identifier (a random UUID, not your email) to Google Analytics so we can recognise you across devices and report on aggregate usage. We do not send your name, email, or message content.
Why we use this data (legal basis)
- Contract — to run your account and the features you ask for (logging ventures, social features, search).
- Consent — for analytics and any future marketing cookies.
- Legitimate interests — security, abuse prevention, and answering reports.
We send three kinds of email:
- Transactional — account confirmation, password reset, security alerts, and a one-off welcome message. Always sent.
- Onboarding — a short series in your first two weeks teaching you how to use the site. Stop them with the unsubscribe link in any of those emails, or from email preferences.
- Marketing — occasional newsletters and re-engagement notes. Stop them the same way.
We use Resend as our email processor. Bounces and spam complaints automatically suppress further marketing email to your address. We never share your email with anyone else.
Sharing
We use Supabase (database, auth, storage), Vercel (hosting), Mapbox (maps), Google Cloud (Places search), Resend (email), and Google Analytics (with your consent). Data may be processed in the UK, EU, or US under appropriate transfer safeguards.
Retention
Account and content data is kept until you delete your account or the content. Analytics data is retained for up to 14 months and then aggregated.
Your rights
You can access, correct, export, or delete your data at any time from your profile, or by emailing us. You can withdraw analytics consent any time using the link below. You can complain to the UK ICO (ico.org.uk) or your local supervisory authority.
